Frase Review

Frase stands out as one of the premier content optimization and AI writing tools we’ve had the pleasure of testing. Its distinctive feature set caters well to content creators, entrepreneurs, marketers, and teams alike. But don’t just take our word for it.

In this comprehensive review, we’ll delve into all the features that Frase offers, providing you with a firsthand look at its user interface. We’ll also put its AI tools to the test and share screenshots of the output, allowing you to witness firsthand what Frase is capable of achieving.

Furthermore, we’ll discuss the pros and cons, pricing details, and much more. By the time you finish reading this post, you’ll be equipped with all the information necessary to form your own conclusions about whether Frase is the right fit for your needs.

What is Frase?

Frase is a comprehensive AI writer and content optimization tool designed to streamline your content creation process. With its AI writer and content editor, powered by artificial intelligence, Frase enables you to produce top-notch content in significantly less time than traditional methods.

Additionally, its suite of SEO tools empowers you to uncover keywords, optimize your content, and improve your search engine ranking, ultimately driving more organic traffic to your website.

Previously, Frase utilized its proprietary AI model for content generation. However, it has now transitioned to OpenAI’s GPT-3 model. This switch has resulted in vastly improved output, with Frase now capable of generating content that closely resembles human writing in mere seconds.

Furthermore, Frase’s integration with GPT-3 has made it more versatile, supporting various content types and accommodating a wider range of use cases. Plus, all content generated by Frase is guaranteed to be 100% unique.

But Frase doesn’t stop there. It also offers additional features tailored to marketers, such as insights and analytics tools, as well as a highly customizable chatbot called Frase Answers. These features further enhance Frase’s utility and make it an indispensable tool for marketers aiming to streamline their content creation and optimization efforts.

What features does Frase offer?

Frase offers a lot of features—more than most of its competitors. Some of the main ones to know about are:

  • AI writer
  • 30+ native AI templates
  • 100+ community AI templates
  • Custom AI tool builder
  • Editing tools (rewrite, shorten, expand, etc.)
  • Content Editor (research and write content with an AI assistant)
  • Optimization tool (keyword suggestions, content scoring, etc.)
  • AI outlines/briefs
  • SEO tools
  • Chatbot
  • Custom chatbot builder (Frase Answers)

We’ll explore some of these features and how they work next as we walk you through how to use the platform.

Getting started

When you first log in to Frase, you’ll arrive at your dashboard. From the side navigation bar, you can access all the AI and SEO tools you need, and manage your projects from the Documents page.

To create your first project, navigate to the Documents page and click “New Document.” Then, decide whether you want to create a brand new article or import existing content for optimization.

Enter the keyword you aim to rank for in the “Target Search Query” field. Frase will use this keyword to analyze the SERPs and provide optimization tips to help you rank higher. Choose the language in which you want to write your content. To keep your projects organized, you can also select a folder to save the project in.

By clicking on “Advanced Settings,” you can decide if you want Frase to crawl the top 20 Google search results for your target keyword or a specific domain for more tailored optimization tips.

Once you’re ready, click “Create Document” to open up the Content Editor. Here, you can start crafting your content with the assistance of Frase’s powerful AI and SEO tools.

1. Content Editor

Frase’s Content Editor is exceptional, boasting one of the best user interfaces we’ve encountered. It functions seamlessly and intuitively.

You can begin writing in the main window, and format your text, add images, and more using the toolbar at the top, similar to how you would in Google Docs or Microsoft Word. On the right-hand side, you’ll find a range of AI-powered workflow tools designed to help you efficiently craft your content.

2. Research tools

Frase can help you improve your content by analyzing the top 20 search results for your chosen keyword. It gathers data to give you research, insights, and tips for optimizing your writing.

In the content editor, go to the Research tab. There, you’ll see a list of top search competitor articles and their headers. If you like one of the headers, you can click an icon to add it to your page for editing. You can also import the whole outline, explore the content, or let Frase write an FAQ based on any competitor’s article.

Additionally, the Research window provides target word count recommendations, as well as the suggested number of images, headers, and links. These suggestions are based on Frase’s analysis of search results. Following these guidelines can increase your chances of ranking higher.

There are two more key features in the Research window:

1. Content Brief Generator: Click Automate Content Brief, and Frase will create a detailed brief based on SERP analysis for your keyword. This brief can guide your writing with guidelines, topic clusters, questions, stats, hyperlink suggestions, and more.

2. SERP Visualizer: Click Visualize SERP Metrics to see detailed metrics for competitor articles, such as word count, topic score, domain rating, headings count, and ranking position. This helps you assess the competition and plan your content strategy effectively.

3. AI-powered editing tools

When writing content in the editor, Frase’s AI-powered tools can help you enhance it. Highlight any text, and a toolbar with AI options will appear.

For instance, the Expand dropdown menu lets Frase elaborate on your content. Select Write about this, and Frase will read the highlighted text and add more sentences or paragraphs to provide additional details. Here’s an example:

If you highlight a sentence you’ve written, Frase will generate extra content that matches your tone and stays on-topic. It’s impressive how seamlessly Frase integrates its additions with your writing, making it hard to tell that an AI wrote it.

Another useful feature of the Expand tool is Insert Transition. You can ask Frase to add a paragraph starting with a specific transition word. For example, using “As long as” might result in a smooth, well-written continuation that blends naturally with your text.

Besides expanding content, Frase can also rewrite it. This is handy if you want to refresh your existing content or create something original that’s similar to a competitor’s article.

Simply highlight the text and click Rewrite. You can choose to rewrite it sentence by sentence or paragraph by paragraph. Frase will rephrase the content to ensure it remains unique while retaining the original meaning.

4. AI writing templates

Frase AI isn’t just for editing; it can also create SEO-optimized content from scratch. Here’s how it works:

Using AI Writing Templates

1. Select a Template: Choose a template based on the type of content you want to create.

2. Enter Instructions: Provide some basic instructions, and Frase will generate the content for you.

Accessing Templates

  • From the Content Editor: Click the AI Write tab on the right-hand side.
  • From the Main Dashboard: Click AI Tools.

Types of Templates

Frase offers a variety of templates for different content needs, including:

  • Article drafts
  • Blog post introductions
  • Bullet point answers
  • Explanations
  • How-to posts
  • Instagram captions
  • Meta descriptions
  • Product descriptions
  • Quora answers
  • Listicle title ideas
  • YouTube video ideas
  • And many more

Community templates

Frase offers more than just its built-in AI writing templates. You can also access a wealth of community-created templates, adding even more versatility to your content creation process.

Accessing Community Templates

  • Go to AI Tools: From the main dashboard.
  • Click on the Community Tab: Here, you’ll find a variety of user-generated templates.

5. Optimization

Once you’ve created your content, Frase can help optimize it for organic search. Here’s how:

Optimizing Content with Frase

  • Open Your Document: In the content editor, go to the document you’re working on.
  • Click the Optimize Tab: Find this in the right-hand sidebar.

Using Related Keywords

  • Keyword List: You’ll see a list of keywords related to your main target keyword.
  • Incorporate Keywords: These keywords are used in top-ranking articles on Google for your target search query. Including them in your content can improve your chances of ranking higher.

Optimization Score

  • Score Display: Frase shows your current optimization score as a percentage at the top of the page.
  • Competitor Benchmark: A yellow line indicates the average score of your top competitors. Aim to score higher than this line to increase your chances of ranking well.

How It Works

  • Keyword Integration: As you add more relevant keywords, your optimization score increases.
  • Score Guidance: The higher your score relative to competitors, the better your content is optimized for search engines.

By following these steps, you can ensure your content is well-optimized for organic search, improving its visibility and potential ranking on Google.

6. Links

Another way Frase can help optimize your content for SEO is by suggesting internal and external links. Click the Links option in the content editor sidebar to view a list of recommended external links.

These suggestions come from SERP analysis, identifying links used in top-ranking articles for your keyword. For internal links, switch to the Internal Links tab. To use this feature, you must connect Frase to Google Search Console, as it relies on GSC data for internal link recommendations.

7. Chatbot

Another impressive feature of Frase is its built-in Chatbot, which assists with content creation. Access it from the content editor by clicking AI Write in the sidebar and switching to the Chat tab. You can ask the Chatbot any question, and it will provide answers.

For instance, if you ask, “What are Frase’s biggest competitors?” it will give you a detailed response. Beyond answering questions, the Chatbot functions as a versatile AI writing tool. You can input any custom instructions or prompts, and it will generate content accordingly.

Whether you need a few paragraphs on a specific topic, ideas for FAQs, or even a new fiction novel concept, the Chatbot can handle it all.

8. Sharing and exporting

In the Content Editor, you can click the Share button to generate a link to the document or content brief, which you can then share with your team.

When your content is complete, click the Export button to download it as a PDF, HTML, or Excel file. Alternatively, you can use Copy to Clipboard to easily paste the content into your CMS for publishing.

One downside is the absence of an option to export documents as DOCX files. It’s surprising they offer PDF downloads, which are not editable, but not DOCX, which is. However, you can easily copy-paste your work into Google Docs or Microsoft Word and save it as a DOCX file from there, so it’s a minor inconvenience.

9. SEO tools

Frase offers several AI-powered SEO tools to help you plan your content strategy effortlessly. Simply click on SEO Tools from your Frase dashboard to access them.

Among the five tools available, the GSC Content Analytics tool stands out as our favorite. It leverages data from your Google Search Console account to provide insightful metrics and KPIs for each page on your website.

This includes information like Ranked Pages, Impressions, Clicks, and more. What sets Frase apart is its ability to categorize pages by status and offer powerful filtering options. This allows you to quickly identify untapped keyword opportunities, pinpoint decaying content that needs updating, and more.

These strategic insights streamline your workflow, making it easier to optimize your content strategy.

For instance, you can use the GSC Content Analytics tool to identify pages with declining performance. Then, you can import the content from these pages into Frase, use the Article Rewriter to refresh it, and publish the updated content—all from one platform.

In addition to the GSC Content Analytics tool, the Topic Planner is another valuable resource. While it functions as a basic keyword research tool, it provides related long-string keywords extracted from the SERPs. These keywords are organized into topics and sub-topics, allowing you to easily add them to your Content Plan with a simple click.

10. Integrations

In addition to Google Search Console, Frase seamlessly integrates with Google Docs and WordPress, streamlining your content creation process. Here’s how to connect them:

  • Navigate to Account > Integrations: Within your Frase account settings.
  • Choose Installation: Select either “Install Add-On” for Google Docs or “Install Plugin” for WordPress, depending on your platform.

Once the integration is set up, you can generate AI content directly within Google Docs or WordPress. This eliminates the need to copy and paste your work from Frase’s content editor, saving you time and effort.

11. Frase Answers

Apart from Frase Content, there’s also Frase Answers, a distinct product with its own set of features. To access it, simply click on the Switch icon at the bottom of the main dashboard area.

Frase Answers enables you to create your own custom chatbot, also known as an Answer Assistant, and embed it on your website for visitors to interact with. Here’s how it works:

  • New Crawl: Begin by clicking on New Crawl and connecting it to your website. Frase will then crawl your entire site, gathering information to create an intelligent knowledgebase.
  • Create Assistant: Customize the appearance of your chatbot and set up your own welcome message and name to personalize the experience.
  • New Dataset: Train your chatbot with custom answers by creating new datasets. Use the Test Sandbox to evaluate its performance.
  • Installation: When you’re satisfied with the chatbot’s performance, install it on your website by inserting just one line of code. It will then be ready to answer questions from your website visitors using the knowledgebase it has acquired.

How much does Frase cost?

Frase pros and cons

Now that we’ve explored all of Frase’s features and pricing plans, here’s a summary of some of the biggest pros and cons:

Frase pros

  • Research and write briefs faster. The way Frase’s content research feature works is excellent. Being able to quickly scan through titles, word counts, and headings used by competitors helps a lot. And having the ability to automatically generate a content brief is especially useful.
  • Easy content optimization. I’ve been doing SEO for years and the most effective way to optimize content is based on what currently ranks. Frase makes this process easy and provides solid recommendations to get your content optimized.
  • Outstanding output quality. The quality of the written content Frase is able to generate is excellent. This probably has something to do with the fact that Frase’s AI is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-3 model, which enables it to write like a human very convincingly.
  • Very flexible. What makes Frase better than most other AI writers is how flexible it is. Thanks to the community feature, there is a near-limitless number of templates to choose from covering every use case imaginable. And you can even program your own templates with the Custom Tool feature.
  • Nice user interface. I really liked Frase’s UI. Of course, a lot of this comes down to personal preference. But personally, I think Frase’s interface is more intuitive than most, and I found it a lot easier to work with. The layout is clean and simple and all the tools work together seamlessly in a way that makes sense for a typical content writer’s workflow.
  • Google Docs integration. I find it a lot easier to optimize content as I write it in Google Docs. So, I definitely appreciated this feature and I’m sure others will.

Frase cons

  • Only very basic keyword research functionality. Unlike some of its competitors, Frase doesn’t really offer a keyword research tool out of the box. The Topic Planner feature can help you discover long-string keywords, but the suggestions it generates aren’t the best, and it doesn’t give you metrics like monthly search volume or keyword difficulty to analyze opportunities.
  • Pro Add-On is more or less essential. The base price of Frase’s subscription plans is very affordable. However, when you factor in the cost of the Pro Add-On it becomes much more expensive. And the add-on is pretty much essential if you plan on producing a high volume of content as without it, you’re capped at 4,000 AI words/per month.

Frase alternatives

If Frase isn’t the right fit for your AI writing or content optimization needs, here are some alternatives you might consider:

1. Scalenut

  • Scalenut is another AI-powered content and copywriting platform similar to Frase. It offers over 40 AI tools/templates for various content needs and includes SEO and content marketing features.
  • In terms of pricing, Scalenut is in a similar range to Frase but offers 100,000 AI words on its entry-level plan, which is significantly more. This makes it a better option for users requiring a higher volume of content production within a tight budget.

2. Surfer SEO

  • Surfer SEO is a preferred alternative to Frase, especially for those seeking an optimization toolkit for content writers rather than an AI writer. It excels in providing best-in-class SEO scoring and optimization recommendations.
  • Startup Bonsai uses Surfer SEO for tasks such as content brief creation, writing, and optimizing blog posts, as well as uncovering new SEO opportunities.
  • While Surfer SEO may be more cost-effective for some due to legacy accounts, without such accounts, Frase or Scalenut would be preferred alternatives.

Consider exploring these alternatives to find the best fit for your specific content creation and optimization requirements.

Final thoughts on Frase

Having experimented with numerous AI writers, Frase AI stood out to us for its extensive range of features. From native AI templates to community-built tools, a chatbot, editing capabilities, optimization recommendations, SEO tools, and more, Frase offers a comprehensive suite of functionalities. Despite its broad feature set, Frase remains remarkably user-friendly, and its AI-generated content output is impressive.

However, it’s important to note that Frase cannot completely replace an experienced writer just yet. While it can expedite the writing process and provide a starting point, the content often requires human editing or rewriting before publication.

Overall, Frase is among the top AI writing tools available. To experience it firsthand, you can sign up for a $1 trial and explore its capabilities yourself. Click the button below to get started.
